Shaping, thinning, and clearance

Correct hedge geometry is slightly wider at the base than at the top. It looks counterintuitive, but a base narrower than the crown puts the lower branches in permanent shade and they die out, which is exactly how hedges end up leggy at the bottom with a heavy top. Every hedge we maintain gets shaped back toward that profile over time.

Thinning is the part most crews skip. Reaching inside and removing selected stems at the base opens the canopy so light and air reach interior growth. That keeps the shrub full, dramatically reduces fungal issues in humid Oklahoma summers, and means the hedge can be cut back later without exposing dead wood.
