When and why to prune

Clearance and deadwood work can be done any time of year — a dead limb over a driveway does not need to wait for a season. Heavy structural pruning is best in the dormant window, roughly December through February, when the tree is not pushing growth, the branch architecture is visible without leaves, and insect and disease pressure is at its lowest. Oaks in particular should be pruned in the dormant season to reduce oak wilt risk.

Young trees are where pruning pays the largest dividend. Three to five years of light structural cuts — establishing a single central leader, removing crossing branches, and eliminating narrow forks that will split under ice — buys you a tree that stands up to storms for decades. Skip it and you get co-dominant stems that eventually fail down the middle at exactly the wrong moment.

Clearance pruning also protects the building. Limbs resting on a roof abrade shingles every time the wind blows, drop debris that clogs gutters and holds water at the fascia, and hand squirrels and roof rats a direct route into the attic. Ten feet of clearance over a roofline eliminates all three problems at once.
