Cut too short and bermuda scalps, the soil bakes, and crabgrass moves into the thin spots. Cut too infrequently and you remove more than a third of the blade in one pass, which shocks the plant and leaves the yellow, straw-colored finish you see on half the block after a hot week. Mowing an Oklahoma lawn the right way

Most lawns in and around McAlester are common bermuda or hybrid bermuda, with fescue in the shaded north-side yards and pockets of zoysia in newer additions. Bermuda wants to be mowed low and often — roughly 1.5 to 2.5 inches during peak growth — while fescue needs to stay tall, 3 to 3.5 inches, so the crown stays shaded and survives July. Running the same height across both is how a shaded yard gets thin and a sunny yard gets scalped.

From late May through early September, bermuda in this area typically needs weekly mowing. Growth slows sharply in April and again in October, when a bi-weekly cut usually holds the line. After a wet stretch we will sometimes make a second pass at a higher setting first, then drop down, rather than bagging a huge volume of wet clippings that would mat and smother the turf.

We mulch clippings back into the lawn by default. Grass clippings are roughly 4 percent nitrogen by dry weight, and returning them supplies a meaningful share of what the lawn needs each season. When growth is heavy, when a property is being photographed for sale, or when you simply prefer the look, we bag on request and haul the clippings off.

What affects the price

Every property is different, so we quote on what we can see rather than a flat rate off a website. These are the factors that move the number, and the reason a two-minute phone call gets you a far more accurate price than any online calculator.

• Total turf area and how much of it is open versus tight around beds and structures
• Slope and terrain — ditch banks and steep back lots take longer and need different equipment
• Number of obstacles: trees, playsets, fences, irrigation heads, landscape borders
• Gate width and access, which determines whether a commercial mower or a smaller deck is required
• Service frequency — weekly accounts price better per visit than one-time cuts
• Current condition, since an overgrown first visit is a cleanup, not a mow
