Why Fall Leaf Removal Matters More Than Curb Appeal
Published July 7, 2026
A wet leaf mat over winter can cost you the whole spring green-up. Here is what happens under there.
Leaves left on the lawn through a wet winter pack into a mat that blocks light and holds moisture against the crown of the grass.
That combination invites snow mold and other turf disease, and it kills off patches that then take most of the spring to fill back in.
On heavily treed lots, one cleanup at the end of the season is rarely enough. Two or three passes across the fall keeps the mat from ever forming.
Beds and fence lines matter too. Debris packed against a fence or piled in a bed holds moisture right where you least want it.
