Weed Control
When to Apply Pre-Emergent in Oklahoma (It's Earlier Than You Think)
Published July 21, 2026
Pre-emergent works on a soil temperature schedule, not a calendar date. Miss the window and you spend the summer chasing crabgrass.
Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures at about two inches deep hold near 55 degrees for several consecutive days. In our part of Oklahoma that usually lands in early spring, well before most people think about the lawn.
A pre-emergent barrier only works if it is already in place before germination. Applied late, it does nothing for weeds that have already sprouted, and you are left doing post-emergent cleanup all summer.
A split application spread several weeks apart usually outperforms a single heavy round, because the barrier stays intact deeper into the season.
One caution: pre-emergent does not distinguish between weed seed and grass seed. If you plan to seed, plan the two around each other.
